It was a nice foggy morning with the Sun just up in the sky after loading the truck for Farmers market. There was just enough time for a quick walk with the camera before it was time to leave. I think the camera did a good job of capturing the beauty of the dawn.

February Sunrise by Kent Lorentzen
This morning’s dawn sky had pretty colors, so I grabbed the camera and went out to capture some photos of the pre-sunrise sky.
Here’s one that that’s not too bad:

I took this from the road in front of my house looking across the Mississippi river at the pine trees on the East bank. The river is completely frozen over and snow covered after the cold weather. You can see some snowmobile tracks on the river and there are a bunch of animal tracks too. Deer, fox, wolves, and whatnot.

Looked out this morning and there were some nice red colors just before sunrise. Grabbed the camera and a tripod, popped out the door and set up. It was 5 degrees below zero, didn’t grab a jacket, hat, or mittens, as it was just outside the door and only gonna be for a moment at a time…
Took a few pics. Decided a jacket and hat would feel good. Hands were still cool, but can’t work the camera with mittens on. Did learn, while moving, that an aluminum tripod and bare hands in below zero temps aren’t a good combination.
Here are a couple of the pics:

I stepped out the door Friday morning and snapped a few pictures just before sunrise of the moon and a star in the sky.

Shortly after that, a neighbor stopped and picked me up for a trip out towards the Red river valley. He had bought a tractor and was going to pick it up, asked if I’d like to ride along. It was a nice change of pace and a good trip, I hadn’t been that way in quite a while.
Seems kinda strange bypassing Bemidji on the new highway and not going by the statue of Paul Bunyan and Babe the blue ox.
We came back a different route and passed by Itasca state park, where the headwaters of the Mississippi river is. Crossed a bridge near there where the river isn’t much more than a creek in size, quite a bit smaller than where it flows by my house.
Got home just before sunset.

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year filled with joy and good cheer!
Here’s a photo showing the dawn of the new year. It was 3 degrees below zero and I didn’t spend too much time taking the photo of the sunrise across the Mississippi river.

May you all enjoy the coming year as much as Raven (my dog) and I enjoyed the dawn of the new year!

Sun on the River 1225 by Kent Lorentzen
This morning’s walk was along the Mississippi river. I took some photos of the sunrise and caught the sun’s reflection on the water.
There is still open water by my house even with the sub-zero temps we’ve had. Just a short distance downstream, the river has frozen over all the way across. If the water is low, the strong current often keeps a spot of water open all winter long.

Tree Top Star 1222 by Kent Lorentzen
I was inspired by something I saw the other day to try for this Tree Top Star photo. Almost waited till too late in the day to get this, as the sun was getting higher all the time.
Anyway… It’s a spruce tree in the front yard. Took a tripod out the front door and around to the side of the house. Took several shots from different positions.
I think this was the best of them, with a star glowing right atop the evergreen and the shadow contrasted against the fresh snow.
Too bad the power lines and my footprints in the snow show up in the picture. Oh Well! Guess you can’t have everything!

December Sunrise 1205 by Kent Lorentzen
Looked out this morning, and this was what I saw. Had to step out the door and take some pictures. Look at that orange sky behind the trees as the sun rises into the sky. All the fresh white snow on trees in the front yard add to the winter scene.
I was only going to step out for a moment and come right back in, so didn’t grab a hat, jacket, or gloves. Heck… It was only 2 below zero, not that cold. Well… Guess what, that one photo turned into several as the light changed. I wasn’t dressed all that warm. Getting back in and standing by the fire felt real good!

Red Skies at Dawn 1128 by Kent Lorentzen
Another photo from this morning, looking at the orange red clouds above the Mississippi river. The pine trees silhouetted against the sky and the reflection on the water make a pretty picture.

November Sunrise 1133 by Kent Lorentzen
It’s worth looking out the window some mornings… Glanced out, and the
sky was so pretty… Picked up the camera, with a quick grab… Dashed out
the door… Snapped some pics.
This is one of them looking across the Mississippi river at the pines on the far bank with orange red clouds in the sky behind them. Reflections off the water add to the colors.
Now I need to get busy and get the rest of the pics uploaded!
